"The Fleming Clan of Scotland: a genealogical history" - coming in late 2026!
The Fulwood estate in Renfrewshire was situated just a few hundred metres from the Barochan estate, so it was clearly held by the Fleming family from ancient times.
Malcolm Fleming, who was made 1st Earl of Wigtown in 1341, is generally regarded as having lived at Fulwood for most of his life. His grandson and heir Thomas 2nd Earl of Wigtown was styled "of Fulwood" in 1375.
After disposing of most of his assets including the Earldom of Wigtown during the 1370s, Thomas Fleming sold Fulwood to Robert Sempill while retaining a right to reside there during his lifetime. Semple was styled "of Fulwood" in 1409, as were his descendants across several centuries.
